Martin White 2015 Presentation and Query

Elder Martin White's Biography (off-site)

Although I presented the White's family story in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois in May 2015, I'm continuing to dig for more information on Martin, Kiturah, and their children, so I still have a request for my cousins -- I am completing my grandmother's research on my 3rd great-grandparents because I am a promise-keeper and I have found much new information that she was not able to obtain during her own research because 1.) she was collecting as much as she could on all the descendants which was a huge undertaking in the days before the internet and 2.) the information was just not available to her or her assistants, even though she traveled to Kentucky where he was born, to Illinois, Kansas and the Missouri border area where he eventually died. She even corresponded by letter with many cousins, most of whom have passed away by now.

Unfortunately, the records that my grandmother copied or received during her family research were burned. The only thing I had in the beginning of my research on Martin & Kiturah was their story preserved in the red White book that my Grandmother published in 1983.  

I'm seeking two things especially, but as with any story, there are always more things I want to know about my 3rd great-grandparents. The two things I would like to have especially is a photograph of Martin and Kiturah (Kitty, Katie). Grandma was able to obtain photographs of some of their children and grandchildren which was eventually published in her genealogy. There are many photographs out there of Abraham Lincoln, so they lived during the time when photographs were possible, but I'm not sure if they ever had their photograph taken or if anyone ever drew or painted their portraits. 

The other thing I would like to have are samples of Martin's handwriting. Do you have any letters or documents with his signature that's been handed down in your family that is not from the internet, that you would be willing to photocopy or scan to share with me? I need family samples to verify what I have found on the internet. If you have either thing, please leave a comment for me in the comment section below. I moderate all comments before I publish them, so if you have personal information such as an email or a home address in your comment, it will not be published -- it's safe with me. However, if you wish to be counted as a member of the family, it would be best to make two comments -- one for me to keep containing your personal information and one to publish here.

I have been approached by people wanting to sell records to me pertaining to Martin White. As to that, I am NOT interested. So don't even bother trying to scam me. 

You would make my day if you have either requested item or another personal object of Martin's such as his Bible, his hymnal, a ministerial logbook or church minutes from Liberty Mosquito, Elk Fork or Pleasant Gap Primitive Baptist churches, sermons, his pulpit or powder horn or something of Kiturah's like a handwritten recipe, a list of Bible family records, her favorite Bible verse, a hand-crafted object and so forth.  These may be added to my family tree on Ancestry. Heirlooms: Little Mementos of Our Ancestors

I've been reading a book for my personal summer reading program called "Gratitude: Affirming One Another Through Stories." By Len Froyen. 2013. I was inspired to compile a list of heirlooms we have by a couple of sentences in a chapter: "Gratitude inspires one generations contributions to the next." and "Gratitude preserves the indispensable heritage of each generation."

Reminds me of my favorite Bible verse found in Proverbs 24:3,4 

By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." 

Both of us have a wealth of cards, letters, newspaper clippings, photos and recipes that have been shared with us and they are scattered throughout this blog. Be sure to come back to see this list as it is sure to grow longer, for when we sat down to compile a list of our treasures, things that we had forgotten about kept coming to mind. Why just today, my husband dug down in a cabinet to retrieve something of his dad's! smile!

Marie Rush's Red Willow Plate. It hung in her farmhouse kitchen for years and she gave it to me when she learned I loved the novel "Blue Willow" by Doris Gates.  Both Marie and I shared a love of reading. 📚

Tacy Ullom's graniteware cup. Tacy cooked in her husband's inn before and after marriage in Coffeyville, Kansas and in Streator, Illinois before moving out to Postle in the panhandle of Oklahoma to settle.

Gladys O'Neal's print of the Good Shepherd given to her by her Sunday School class. It is from a painting by Warner E. Sallman.

Gladys O'Neal also had a framed copy of this print which was hanging in one of her bedrooms. She gave it to our son. It is called "The Pilot." Also by Warner E. Sallman. 

Gladys Esther (White) O'Neal worked on her genealogy for 28 years, finally publishing it in 1983. Each one of her children and grandchildren received a copy. There are no more copies and Vera Lane holds the copyright. 

Gladys O'Neal had a little ceramic shop out in her garage. Many of the ceramic pieces was used in the wedding cakes she made for the young couples in the area and as VBS crafts. She took some china painting classes and this is one of the plates she painted. I always thought this plate was lovely, so it came to me upon her death as she had a little note taped to the back of the plate that I was to have it.

Gladys O'Neal received this book for Christmas from her parents, Papa and Mama White when she was a girl.

Maurine Ullom's small crockery pitcher. She had a love for dolls and miniatures and she used it for toothpicks. 

We visited Hallie Maple at her 2-story home up in Stanberry, MO several times where she gave me all of her genealogy notes for the Bailey and Morris families and gave me this old doll. She made the dress herself as it was to grace her made bed as a bed doll.  According to the internet, classic boudoir dolls were meant for decoration rather than play and was popular during the 1920s to 1940s. 

Robert O'Neal's 2 year old summer suit he wore for a photo along with long hose that went up over his knees and high top, tie-on oxford shoes. Imagine wrestling a squirmy kid in and out of this outfit. 😁

Little Robert, when about two or three years old, played with these little dolls. As worn as the paint is on the female doll, I'd say his three siblings played with them too! 😄

Lavon Robertson purchased a pair of these lamps as a gift for her mother. They sat on the vanity in the guest bedroom for many years.

Melba Robertson gave Lavon this perfume bottle which sat on her dresser until Lavon's passing.

Museums

I've written before about our weekend mini-vacations here in a post called Weekend Ramblers.  And I've written about a historical museum in Miller County, MO that we have visited several times and my husband is a life-time member of. However, in my positivity journal this month, I have written a list of museums we (either my birth family or my husband's birth family or our married family) have visited because we enjoy history, some show exhibits of people we find interesting (see my history nut blog) and some pertain to our genealogical research. 

In my journal, I will only be listing the Museum's name, city and state.  Read the labels down below the post which might give you some clues to the various surnames that we found exhibits on or genealogical information at or places that were important to our ancestors. I don't want to make this post too complicated, but if you see a leaf emblem behind the name, that indicates a important place for His 🍁 or Her 🍀 family.
